Making a difference in your democracy means something different to everyone. There are countless ways to participate in local elections beyond running for council and voting.
Work on a
candidate’s campaign
Interested in campaigning but not interested or ready to run your own campaign? Find a candidate in your community you want to support and help them with their campaign.
Campaign volunteers often help with:
- Canvassing & knocking on voters’ doors, distributing campaign materials, and making phone calls
- Helping with campaign organizing and managing other volunteers
- Delivering signs to supporters
- Fundraising for your candidate’s campaign
- Getting out the vote on election day

Working as an
election official
Some municipalities may be hiring for temporary roles during the election period and/or on election day.
Visit your municipality’s website to learn about eligibility and how to apply for available positions.
Organize a candidate forum/debate in your community
Candidate forums and debates are spaces for people to hear from candidates and ask them questions.
These forums increase voters’ understanding of complex issues and policies, while also connecting the community to the electoral process.
Community-based organizations and municipalities can facilitate and promote engaging forums.
